A Message For All Students
If you are a student you know that school is starting soon! For many people going to school out of state, its tempting to put off dental work until you go home for the winter or summer, but there are many ways to stay proactive with your tooth care. If you are a college student who likes to drink, be aware that beers with lighter color and higher hop content can improve tooth strength due to their enrichment with minerals such as calcium and silicon. Elements such as Tannins, which can be as effective as fluoride at preventing buildup. Limiting sugar intake and eating a healthy diet are sure fire ways of keeping your teeth safe, so try to save the pizza study sessions and late night ice cream for the right occasions. Such care tips will keep your smile healthy and reduce the likelihood of needing more costly treatments such as an implant or crown.

Celebrate Awareness with Gum Care Month
September is National Gum Care Month, and with that we would like to provide some tips for healthier gums! Brushing and flossing twice a day is a sure way to decrease the likelihood of periodontal disease. This includes cleaning your tongue! You can also use fluoride tooth paste and therapeutic mouth was to help improve your gum health. Gum health can also be linked to bad breath, so cleaning up your gums can result in longer lasting fresh breath!

Preventative Tip!

Another fun tip for fixing bad breath and preventing bacteria buildup is chewing seeds such as anise, sunflower, or fennel which has antiseptic qualities. This can be a simple way to keep your breath smelling fresher and may allow you to put off that teeth whitening you were thinking about!

Habits to Develop
  1. Replace your toothbrush regularly - Your toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months or at the start of each quarter or semester! 
  2. Brush your teeth twice a day - Brushing your teeth twice a day should be a top priority if you want to remove plaque and prevent cavities. This is the easiest way! 
  1. Floss at least once a day- This should go hand in hand with brushing twice a day since flossing is also an essential part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy, ridding the teeth of food particles that get stuck in them. 
  2. Dental Hygiene appointments every six months at least! - If you are a college student living on a budget, try finding a local dentistry school, and ask if they provide free or discounted services. If you feel you need one now, don't hesitate, visit a dentist near you today!
  1. Rinse with fluoride mouthwash- This mouthwash will give you a better odds of killing the harmful bacteria in your mouth while protecting your teeth from decay and gum disease.
  1. Use fluoride toothpaste-  Like mouthwash, fluoride toothpaste helps shield your smile from tooth decay while reducing plaque and gingivitis.
  1. Chew sugar-free gum- Sugar-free gum after meals or snacks rinses away acids from your teeth. This is a great alternative to brushing.
  1. Swish with water- During late-night study sessions, students may consume large amounts of sodas or coffee, both of which can be damaging to your teeth. Drinking plenty of water is one preventative measure to keeping your teeth in shape for that post-college job interview!
  1. Stay away from snacking- Snacking is also common during study sessions, especially when studying late into the night. It’s better to snack on things like dairy products, fresh produce and nuts than on sugary, sticky foods like candy
